A group of students from City College Brighton and Hove who are
currently studying for their Young Apprenticeship in Construction, are
providing their skills free of charge to The Whitehawk Inn in East
Brighton. The tasks they are undertaking include protecting fencing,
benches and stairways with water resistant wood sealant, painting and
decorating lower areas of the building plus bricking and
plaster-boarding vents in an area of the basement which is leaking.

The Whitehawk Inn is a community learning centre and internet cafe
which provides a vital link between adult education, training and
employment. Learners of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to enrol on
courses at the Centre and help is available to search for jobs, write a
CV or prepare for interviews. Centre Manager Sue Prince says:

“We consider it a privilege to have been offered the opportunity to
engage with the City College East construction students and have them
working here at the Centre. It’s mutually beneficial as it enables us
to have some long outstanding work done on the property and having the
students here fits with our ethos of helping individuals becoming ‘job
ready’. The students were easy to be around, worked hard and seemed to
enjoy the free cappuccinos on offer!”

Sam Ingram, City College’s Employer Engagement Officer & Work
Placement Officer, says:

“It’s important for the College to work with local organisations
such as the Whitehawk Inn which does such vital work in the community.
This project also helped the students to obtain practical working
experience which enables them to acquire the full accreditation for
their diploma. On top of that, they’re getting used to the sort of
challenges they may face in a maintenance-based role when they begin
their hunt for employment.”
